An open-source observability toolkit from Arize for debugging and analyzing LLM applications. phoenix.arize.com ↗
Arize Phoenix is a credible, widely adopted open-source LLM observability and evaluation toolkit built on OpenTelemetry, with 10,200+ GitHub stars and active community development. Its core strength is a no-vendor-lock-in, self-hostable architecture that appeals strongly to engineers, but the product is frankly two distinct things: a free open-source tool (Phoenix) positioned for development-time debugging, and a separate commercial managed platform (Arize AX) that is required for production-scale, multi-team, compliance-sensitive deployments. Graduating from Phoenix to AX is a new sales contract, not a tier upgrade, and enterprise contracts run $60,000-$100,000+/year on span-and-GB dual metering that can escalate fast on agent workloads. For a large enterprise, Phoenix reduces build cost and evaluation friction, but AX must be evaluated as a distinct enterprise purchase against Langfuse, LangSmith, Braintrust, and others.
