An AI gateway platform that manages API keys, offers observability, fallbacks, and prompt management across multiple LLM providers. portkey.ai ↗
Portkey AI is a mature, developer-friendly AI gateway that has grown to serve 650+ organizations and process 2+ trillion tokens, with a broad integration surface (1,600+ LLMs, 45+ providers, 8+ agent frameworks) and a credible open-source core on GitHub. However, the most structurally significant recent event is its acquisition by Palo Alto Networks in May 2026, folding Portkey into the Prisma AIRS security platform. Enterprise buyers must now evaluate it as a Palo Alto product line rather than an independent vendor, which changes procurement dynamics, roadmap control, and exit optionality. Key weaknesses include log-based pricing that creates observability blind spots at scale, compliance and on-prem features gated entirely behind custom-priced Enterprise tiers, and a thin coordination moat that hyperscalers are actively encroaching on by building similar routing natively into their AI SDKs. The platform is real and production-proven, but the post-acquisition identity and roadmap are still settling.
