Requiring browser re-execution to certify each repair before it enters SFT data (the WebWorld loop) makes open-weight models substantially better at interactive web-code behavior than training on raw HTML, closing most of the gap to frontier models.
Self-improvement loop over HTML artifacts: a VLM critiques, a planner compiles typed interaction contracts, and a browser re-executes candidates, issuing acceptance certificates only for target progress plus preservation of prior capabilities; 32,800 certified transitions were used to SFT Qwen-based models at 4B, 9B, and 27B, matched against Raw supervision at the same budget, evaluated on HTMLBench-400 and MiniAppBench-Val, with 9B acceptance-rule ablations.
At 27B, WebWorld improves over Raw by 5.3 points on HTMLBench-400 (52.7 vs 47.4), 9.7 TC-pass points, and 14.9 points on MiniAppBench-Val (85.5 vs 70.6), described as matching frontier systems like Kimi-K2.6 (49.8) and GPT-5.4 (49.2). The lift scales with size (3.4 at 4B, 4.8 at 9B, 5.3 at 27B) and concentrates on functionality/TC-pass, not visual scores. The mechanism ablation at 9B shows the naive critique loop without the certificate gains only 0.4 points, versus 4.8 with it. Scope: web/HTML front-end code only; gains hold within this domain and transfer to a second web benchmark, but not beyond it.
Authors concede: single seed-42 runs per SFT cell, evaluation limited to two web-code benchmarks (both from the same broad area as training), and frontier rows are 'benchmark context' rather than controlled comparisons (different data, training, prompting). The certificate's weakest proof levels (localized visual, static structural) reintroduce some non-executable admission. Unstated: the probe catalogue and repair-skill inventory may not cover arbitrary web behaviors; a 27B open model beating GPT-5.4 on a benchmark co-designed in the same research community invites contamination or tuning-to-eval concerns despite the leakage audit; SFT data comes from the pipeline's own contracts, so the model may learn the contract format rather than general repair.
A skeptic would note the primary benchmark (HTMLBench, Wu et al. 2026b) shares authors/community with this paper, that single-seed SFT results can swing a point or more, that 'matching GPT-5.4' is a cross-family comparison with no standardized prompting or test-time budget, and that 0.4-point and 5.3-point deltas were measured on different model sizes (the clean ablation is only at 9B). The certified-pool composition is dominated by replay and capability-gain proofs on synthetic artifacts, which may not reflect messy production web apps.
In the next 12 to 24 months, this is evidence that cheap verifier-in-the-loop data generation (executable checks, no human labels) can push mid-size open models to frontier level on narrow, verifiable domains, which pressures API pricing power for coding use cases but says nothing directly about revenue, labor, or capex economics yet.
Technical Capability: Shows that a deterministic external verifier, not a learned judge, can close the proposer-judge gap, a concrete recipe for self-improvement wherever behavior is executable and checkable.
Market & Valuation: If 27B open-weight models match frontier APIs on interactive web-code tasks, the pricing premium for frontier coding models erodes in this segment, favoring open-model inference providers.
